2019

• Dr. David Cock wins ACM SIGOPS 2019 Hall of Fame award for a paper titled "seL4: formal verification of an OS kernel". The paper was published ten years ago at SOSP 2009.

• Ioana Giurgiu, Oriana Riva, Dejan Juric, Ivan Krivulev, and Gustavo Alonso receive the ACM/IFIP/Usenix International Middleware Conference 2019 Test-of-Time Award for their paper on mobile phones and cloud computing published in Middleware 2009

• Debopam Bhattacherjee's paper "Network Topology Design at 27,000 Km/hour" awarded the Applied Networking Research Prize

• Frank McSherry has been awarded the Test-Of-Time Award at SIGMOD 2019 for his paper "Privacy integrated queries: an extensible platform for privacy-preserving data analysis"

   

2018

• Zsolt István won the ETH Outstanding Doctoral Theses 2018 Award for his PhD Thesis: "Building Distributed Storage with Specialized Hardware".  (Department of Computer Science Award Winners).

• Onur Mutlu has been elected as a member of the Academy of Europe (Academia Europea).

• The paper 'Sequence Classification with Human Attention' co-authored by Nora Hollenstein won the 'Special award for the best paper on research inspired by human language learning and processing' at CoNLL 2018. 'Sequence Classification with Human Attention' by Maria Barrett, Joachim Bingel, Nora Hollenstein, Marek Rei and Anders Søgaard

• Gustavo Alonso received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he obtained his PhD.

• Kaan Kara obtained second place in System Design Contest (FPGA category) of the 2018, 55th Design Automation Conference. More than 100 international teams participated in the two categories (GPU and FPGA).

2017

• Nora Hollenstein, our PhD student, and Jonathan Rotsztejn, our Master Thesis student,  won the 2017 International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation (SemEval-2017) "relation classification" competition, placing first out of 28 teams from all over the world. 

• Jan Rellermeyer, Gustavo Alonso, and Timothy Roscoe receive the ACM/IFIP/Usenix International Middleware Conference 2017 Test-of-Time Award for their paper "R-OSGi: Distributed Applications through Software Modularization", published in Middleware 2007

• Onur Mutlu elected ACM Fellow

• Vasiliki Kalavri's PhD Thesis "Performance Optimization Techniques and Tools for Distributed Graph Processing" awarded the IBM Innovation Award 2017 by FNRS, the Belgian Fund for Scientific research.

• Jana Giceva awarded the ETH Medal for her dissertation: Database/Operating system co-design

• DoppioDB demo at SIGMOD 2017 selected as one of the best demos in the program ("doppioDB: A Hardware Accelerated Database" by David Sidler, Zsolt Istvan, Muhsen Owaida, Kaan Kara, and Gustavo Alonso) and won an honorable mention

• Onur Mutlu received the DFRWS 2017 Best Paper Award as co-author of the paper "Improving the Reliabililty of Chip-off Forensic Analysis of NAND Flash Memory Devices"

• Torsten Hoefler won the Distinguished Paper Award at OOPSLA 2016 as coauthor of the paper “Modeling and Analysis of Remote Memory Access Programming”

• The paper entitled "Continuous Runahead: Transparent Hardware Acceleration for Memory Intensive Workloads" by Milad Hashemi, Onur Mutlu, and Yale N. Patt, has been selected one of the 6 best papers at MICRO 2016.

• Tobias Grosser received SNSF Ambizione Fellowship to work heterogeneous compute on http://polly.llvm.org/

• Timo Schneider, Otto Bibartiu and Torsten Hoefler received the Best Student Paper Award at Hot Interconnects 2016

• Patrick Schmid, Maciej Besta and Torsten Hoefler won Karsten Schwan Best Paper Award for their paper "High-Performance Distributed RMA Locks" at ACM HPDC'16 in Kyoto

• Tobias Grosser won an @hipeac Technology Transfer Award for work on Polly enabling Polyhedral Compilation in LLVM

2015

• Torsten Hoefler won the 2015 Latsis Prize

• Pravin Shinde, Kornilios Kourtis, Antoine Kaufmann and Timothy Roscoe received the Best Poster award at EuroSys 2015 for "Dragonet: a Host Network Stack for Harnessing NIC Hardware".

• Timothy Roscoe and Robert Soulé (USI) received the Google Research Award for the "Online Data Center Modeling" project

• Torsten Hoefler received the ERC Starting Grant

2014

• Louis Woods awarded the ETH Medal for his dissertation: FPGA-Enhanced Data Processing Systems.

• Gustavo Alonso elected IEEE Fellow

• Timothy Roscoe awarded the Jay Lepreau Best Paper award at OSDI 2014 as co-author of the paper: Arrakis: The Operating System is the Control Plane by Simon Peter, Jialin Li, Irene Zhang, Dan R. K. Ports, Doug Woos, Arvind Krishnamurthy, Thomas Anderson, and Timothy Roscoe.

• Cagri Balkesen obtained an Excellent Presentation Award at VLDB 2014

• Jana Giceva received the Google PhD Fellowship Award

• Tahmineh Sanamrad received the Google Anita Borg Scholarship Award

• Timothy Roscoe awarded the first NSDI "Test of Time" award as one of the authors of the paper: "Operating system support for planetary-scale network services" published at the first NSDI in 2004.

2013

• Timothy Roscoe elected ACM Fellow

• Timothy Roscoe awarded the 2013 ACM  SIGCOMM Test of Time award as one of the authors of the paper: "PlanetLab: An Overlay Testbed for Broad-Coverage Services" by Brent Chun, David Culler, Timothy Roscoe, Andy Bavier, Larry Peterson, Mike Wawrzoniak, and Mic Bowman.

• Louis Woods received the best paper award at FCCM'13 for the paper: "Parallel Computation of Skyline Queries" by Louis Woods, Jens Teubner, and Gustavo Alonso.

• Cagri Balkesen received the ICDE 2013 "Best Paper Runner-Up" award for the paper: "Main-Memory Hash Joins on Multi-Core CPUs: Tuning to the Underlying Hardware" by Cagri Balkesen, Jens Teubner, Gustavo Alonso, and Tamer Ozsu.

2012

• Philipp Unterbrunner awarded the 2012 Chorafas Prize for outstanding contributions and excellent scientific achievement in his doctoral dissertation
